May 1st 1837 - William IV Prints

After having smuggled his fiancé from her bedroom window by a crude rope-ladder, the husband-to-be leads a dainty walk to a waiting coach and horses that is to take the couple away to be secretly married at Gretna Green. They are dressed impeccably in the fashions of the day, the artist includes the witty and somewhat suggestive attachment of a large purse to the women's hourglass waist. Subtle colouring and whimsical trees and fauna are typical of the style of the time.
