John Berney Ladbrooke.
R.A, B.I, S.S & Norwich Society 1803 - 1879 Unsigned but almost certainly a companion piece to Peasant girl outside cottage
Norfolk born artist well known for his views of the English landscape. A significant member of the Norwich School and apprentice to the great John Crome. A scene that is set in a small village at the foot of a tall mountain, shows a young peasant girl, distinguished by a blue cloth she is holding, making her way towards the viewer. Although all the cottages of the village show signs of human activity (stacked wood, smoke from chimneys), the figure of the young girl is our only contact with the people of this rustic setting. The tinted pinks and browns of the distant mountain and the colour of the light golden sky provide an accompaniment to the colours of the clothes worn by the young girl, suggesting the affect of Man upon his landscape, and the effect of the landscape upon Man.
