John Berney Ladbrooke
R.A, B.I, S.S & Norwich Society 1803 -1879
Norfolk born artist well known for his views of the English landscape. A significant member of the Norwich School and apprentice to the great John Crome. A young girl, possibly a shepherdess, in an isolated rural setting. The scene is composed on a vertical axis of correspondence, with the human figure in the foreground placed in front of a dwelling double her height in the midground, which in turn is placed in front of a mountain double the height of the cottage in the background, which in turn is linked by its snow covered peak to the white cloth cap that the young girl is wearing. The wood fire smoke rising from the chimney of the cottage and the climbing rose bush on its wall add to a idealised country image. Exhibited:
