Alfred Richard Blundell

1945

British painter, also known for his prints and engravings on glass. Studied at the Slade, London. Is Exhibited in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco (Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts Collection) and in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

A large landscape in winter. The expanse of deep snow, leading to a suggested woodland area near the blue horizon, is broken up only by the near frozen river in the foreground, flanked by a skeletal silver birch tree and a willow. An unseen presence, possibly a small rowing boat or a swan set to enter the winter scene, is suggested by undulating ripples in the water of the lower right-hand side of the picture.
